Developed in March 2014 by USAID and Systems for Improved Access to Pharmaceuticals and Services (SIAPS) to support the United Nations Commission on Life-Saving Commodities, this guide presents an approach to assessing a country’s theoretical need for three overlooked life-saving maternal health commodities: oxytocin, magnesium sulfate and misoprostol. National program managers and other key stakeholders can adapt this document to compare estimations with actual procurement data, allowing for focused analysis of gaps and challenges requiring attention. The role of the private sector is also highlighted to complement the reproductive health commodity security work that is critical to increasing access to medicines.

Rabin Martin’s Olivia Reyes participated in the working group that reviewed the available evidence and helped shape the recommended algorithms.
