The objective of medical research is not surprising – develop interventions to improve the health of individuals, communities and populations. What is surprising? Many women, especially those who are pregnant or considering pregnancy, have been left out when it comes to testing the effectiveness of new medicines. The concern for global health is obvious. To raise awareness and explore potential solutions, we helped convene a conference in Geneva, Switzerland, hosted by the United Nations, the International Center for Research on Women and other NGOs. Forty-five leading scientists and advocates from Africa, Asia and Latin America attended and produced a global work plan to address the clinical research needs of women and adolescent girls.
