Every summer Rabin Martin takes one day outside of the office to embody its mission of improving the health of underserved populations. This year, Rabin Martin employees from our New York and London offices spent the day volunteering at the Center for Active Older Adults at Sunnyside Community Services in Sunnyside, NY. The event was an opportunity to engage with and advocate on behalf of local senior citizens. In partnership with volunteer organization New York Cares, Rabin Martin employees participated in multiple activities with the center’s seniors aimed at heart and cognitive health, finishing the day by serving a healthy snack. Activities such as shuffleboard and fitness aerobics required both Rabin Martin staff and seniors to get moving whereas sudoku and word search activities were available for those who wanted to exercise their brains.
Sunnyside Community Services is a second home for thousands of elderly New Yorkers. A 2017 study reported that the population of New Yorkers over 65 years of age has grown by 19.2% from 2005 to 2015. This is an even more impressive jump when considering that the overall population only grew by 7.47%. Places such as Sunnyside Community Services are an incredible resource for ageing New Yorkers and it was a privilege being welcomed into their space.
At Rabin Martin we believe that global health means stronger local communities, including our own! Our community engagement helps reinforce the underlying spirit of service which Rabin Martin employees carry through all that they do.
