Read the PostMinneapolis, MN – October 29, 2024 – This year’s theme at American Public Health Association #APHA 2024 meeting is “Rebuilding Trust in Public Health and Science.” To that end, BlackDoctor.org and Rabin Martin partnered to present “trust” data within a poster presentation that shows how Black Americans feel trust is earned among pharmaceutical industry. This data uncovers how Black individuals think about trust and their health and identifies ways industry can better partner with the Black community to meet their needs.
Comprised of more than 45 million people in the U.S., Black and brown individuals have historically had a complicated, and often painful, relationship with the healthcare system. #APHA poster presentation about trust among Black Americans reveals:
According to APHA, public health is inherently future-focused, looking toward prevention and promotion to enable populations to live longer, healthier lives. But recent political polarization, underfunding and distrust of scientific research threaten our ability to create optimal, equitable health and well-being for all. The promise and effectiveness of public health is challenged by pseudoscience. Given this discord, we need to rebuild trust in public health and science.
“In a time when rebuilding trust in public health and science is more critical than ever, pharmaceutical companies have a unique responsibility to earn that trust through action,” says Terri Jackson, Partner, Rabin Martin, who is onsite presenting the data. “Trust is not given—it is earned by recognizing that a prescription alone isn’t enough. Pharmaceutical companies must address the social factors that deeply influence health outcomes.”
Co-author Jade Curtis, Executive Editor, BlackDoctor.org reinforces the value of trust. “Culture is who you trust. The reason our audience considers BDO home is because they know trust is the cornerstone in all we do. We constantly evaluate trust, and this data in one step to help us learn more.”
